Flowers to Brighten the Day; Art of the week

Every week I am going to pick a piece of artwork I have already created and write about it. For the first week I decided to pick one of my favourite pieces I have created. I created this piece back in Summer 2011, inspired by all the flowers outside my living room window. It is painted on a thin edge canvas 20×16 inches. I have textured the canvas with ripped paper, card and stencil and painted it in acrylic and emulsion paints. The flowers are textured with extra Shakespearean paper, musical note paper and string.

This piece is currently for sale on Etsy.

Plans for the week ahead…

Today was meant to be a productive day of re-photographing all my art, but as the weather was gloomy and not much natural light came into the house, I have had to leave it!

So as well as re-photographing all my artwork and products, this week I hope to…

  • Make some prints of my original artwork on card stock
  • Make some prints into bookmarks by laminating them and adding ribbon for a decorative finish
  • Textured some more canvas boards and bring them to life with some of my illustrations
  • Make some Valentines day illustrations

Lets hope I can keep motivated and stick to my plans!

In Bloom…. original canvas painting

My newest piece of art, In bloom, inspired by the approaching Spring. There’s nothing better than painting warm Spring/Summer scenes in the middle of Winter. I have textured the 12×12 inch canvas with ripped paper, card, butterfly and flower stencils for a rough effect. I have also textured the flowers with paper and string, to spring them out of the canvas slightly.

All I need to do is varnish this piece, and it will be available for sale in my Etsy shop.

Textured Canvas Boards

When I am using canvas board, I start off by texturing it with all sorts of ripped card, paper and stencil, sticking them down with PVA glue and water. Usually I use musical note paper, and pages out of old Shakespearean texts such as Romeo and Juliet, and Macbeth. Another texturing effect that works brilliantly is tissue paper. The reason I use different types of paper and card is to enhance the board, so not only are two boards the same but it gives my paintings a great ‘rough’ look.

I have not yet decided what to paint on this 16×16 inch textured board…. but will definitely be posting the results when I do!

Alien and Fairy friends meeting in the garden…. original canvas painting.

This is my newest painting Alien and Fairy friends meeting in the garden. I have textured a 12×12 inch canvas board with ripped paper, card and flower stencils and painted in acrylic, emulsion and watercolour paints. I based this painting on a doodle illustration I did a while back…
